Current Status and Outlook

CHABA (IGME) now a strong Typhoon as its circulation have shrunk in size…intensified rapidly as it quickly moves across the North Philippine Sea in the general direction of the Southern Islands of Japan (Ryukyus).

This typhoon is forecast to continue moving Northwestward with a turn to the North-Northwest within  the next 12 to 24 hours towards the Ryukyu Islands, and will exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) around noon or early afternoon tomorrow (Oct 03).

Where is Chaba (IGME)?

As of 11:00 AM PhT today, October 02...0300 GMT.  The small eye was located over the central part of the North Philippine Sea (near 20.1N 130.9E), about 929 km east-southeast of Basco, Batanes or 779 km south-southeast of Okinawa, Japan. 

How strong is it?

Maximum Sustained Winds (10-min avg): 180 kph near the center...Gustiness: 225 kph

Where is it heading?

It was moving rapidly Northwest @ 30 kph, towards northern part of the North Philippine Sea and the Ryukyu Islands.

Forecast Highlights

- Chaba (Igme) is forecast to become a Super Typhoon (STY) by tomorrow morning (Mon, Oct 03).

- Chaba (Igme) remains not a threat to the country.

- Chaba is forecast to just remain along the open waters of the North Philippine Sea through Monday morning,  and shall exit the PAR by Monday noon or afternoon (Oct 03).

- Chaba (Igme) will just pass between 750 to 800 km from Batanes Group of Islands late tonight through tomorrow morning (Oct 03).  Its circulation will remain at sea, far away from the Philippine Landmass.
