Tropical Storm Wukong (Quinta) has strengthened slightly as it inches closer to the island of Leyte...now moving over Leyte Gulf. This storm is expected to make landfall over Eastern Leyte around midnight (Dec 26), somewhere along the towns of Mayorga, MacArthur and Abuyog. Stormy weather continuing across Samar and Leyte Provinces.

Wukong (Quinta) will continue to enhance the Northeast Monsoon (Amihan) and bring moderate to strong winds with "on-and-off" rains across the Bicol Region, Eastern & Southern Luzon today through Wednesday.

Residents and visitors along Bicol Region, Southern Luzon and the Visayas should closely monitor the development of Wukong (Quinta).

CURRENT STORM ANALYSIS

As of 6 pm today, the center of Tropical Storm Wukong (Quinta) was located over the Philippine Sea...about 172 km southeast of Tacloban City, Leyte or 204 km east-southeast of Ormoc City, Leyte...currently moving west-northwest with an increased forward speed of 24 km/hr in the general direction of Leyte-Northern Cebu-Panay Area.

Maximum Sustained Winds (1-min. avg) have slightly increased to 75 km/hr near the center with higher gusts. Tropical Storm Force Winds (62-117 km/hr) extend outward up to 30 kilometers from the center Wukong (Quinta) is an average-sized tropical cyclone with a diameter of 445 kilometers across. The 24-hour rainfall accumulation near and to north of the center of TS Wukong (Quinta) is estimated to be heavy (310 mm).


3-DAY FORECAST OUTLOOK*

Tropical Storm Wukong (Quinta) is expected to continue moving west-northwestward during the next 24 to 48 hours...with a turn to the west through 72 hours. On the forecast track, the core of Wukong (Quinta) is expected to make landfall over Central Leyte (along the towns of Mayorga-MacArthur-Abuyog Area) around midnight (Dec 26) and pass very close to Ormoc City around 2AM Wednesday (Dec 26)...and cross the northern tip of Cebu (over Bogo City) passing over Bantayan Island and North-Central Panay on Wednesday morning til noontime. By Wednesday afternoon, Wukong (Quinta) may pass just south of Boracay Island Resort, and move across the Calamian Group of Islands on Wednesday evening. On Thursday through Friday, Wukong (Quinta) should be over the West Philippine Sea as it exits the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

WUKONG (Quinta) is forecast to slightly weaken during the next 24 hours as it traverses Visayas...and could re-strengthen slightly once it reaches the Sulu and West Philippine Seas.

The following is the summary of the 3-day forecast outlook on this system:

WEDNESDAY EVENING: Weakens slightly as it moves across the Sulu Sea...about 73 km west-southwest of Boracay [6PM DEC 26: 11.6N 121.3E @ 65kph].
THURSDAY EVENING: Over the West Philippine Sea...regain intensity...about 384 km west-northwest of Coron, Palawan [6PM DEC 27: 12.5N 116.7E @ 75kph].
FRIDAY EVENING: Turns west to west-southwestward while over the West Philippine Sea, exits PAR as it starts to weaken...about 707 km west of Coron, Palawan [6PM DEC 28: 12.3N 113.7E @ 65kph].

*Please be reminded that the Forecast Outlook changes every 6 hours, and the Day 3 Forecast Track have an average error of 250 km...while the wind speed forecast error, averages 35 kph per day. Therefore, a turn to the left or right of its future track and changes in its wind speed must be anticipated from time to time.

INNER RAINBANDS - affecting and spreading across Leyte, Samar, Dinagat and Siargao Islands. Tropical Storm Conditions with Tropical Storm Force Winds (62-85 kph) will be expected along these bands.
OUTER RAINBANDS - affecting and spreading across Bicol Region including Masbate, Ticao, Bohol, Cebu, Misamis Oriental, Agusan and Surigao Provinces. Tropical Depression Conditions with moderate to strong winds (<62 kph) will be expected along these bands (click here to know more about Rainbands).
24HR TOTAL RAINFALL ACCUMULATION - from 5 up to 100 mm (slight to heavy rainfall) can be expected along areas affected by the outer & inner rainbands (see above)...with isolated amounts of 101 to 310 mm (heavy) along areas near and north of the center of Wukong (Quinta).
