Tropical Depression 27W (Quinta) becomes Tropical Storm Wukong...moving closer to Leyte...expected to make landfall over Eastern Leyte later tonight. Inner rainbands (with moderate to heavy rains and winds of 40-60 kph) approaching the coastal areas of Leyte Island and Southern Samar.

Wukong (Quinta) will continue to enhance the Northeast Monsoon (Amihan) and bring moderate to strong winds with "on-and-off" rains across the Bicol Region, Eastern & Southern Luzon today.

Residents and visitors along Bicol Region, Southern Luzon and the Visayas should closely monitor the development of Wukong (Quinta).

CURRENT STORM ANALYSIS

As of 12 noon today, the center of Tropical Storm Wukong (Quinta) was located over the Philippine Sea...about 299 km southeast of Borongan City, Eastern Samar or 322 km east-southeast of Tacloban City, Leyte...currently moving west to west-northwest with a forward speed of 19 km/hr in the general direction of Leyte-Southern Samar-Panay Area.

Maximum Sustained Winds (1-min. avg) are at 65 km/hr near the center with higher gusts. Wukong (Quinta) is an average-sized tropical cyclone with a diameter of 445 kilometers across. The 24-hour rainfall accumulation near the center of TS Wukong (Quinta) is estimated to be heavy (300 mm).


3-DAY FORECAST OUTLOOK*

Tropical Storm Wukong (Quinta) is expected to move west-northwest during the next 24 to 48 hours...with a turn to the west through 72 hours. On the forecast track, the core of Wukong (Quinta) is expected to make landfall over Central Leyte, just south of Tacloban City later tonight and pass very close to Ormoc City around 2AM Wednesday (Dec 26)...and cross the northern tip of Cebu (near Bogo City) passing over Bantayan Island and Northern Panay on Wednesday morning til noontime. By Wednesday afternoon, Wukong (Quinta) may pass just south of Boracay, and move across the Calamian Group of Islands on Wednesday evening. By Thursday through Friday, Wukong (Quinta) should be over the West Philippine Sea as it exits the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

WUKONG (Quinta) is forecast to maintain its strength during the next 24 hours as it traverses Visayas...and could strengthen slightly once it reaches the Sulu and West Philippine Seas.

The following is the summary of the 3-day forecast outlook on this system:

TUESDAY NOON: Over the northern shoreline of Panay (Northern part of Capiz-Aklan Area)...about 33 km west of Roxas City [12PM DEC 26: 11.6N 122.5E @ 65kph].
WEDNESDAY NOON: Over the West Philippine Sea...intensifying slightly...about 235 km west-northwest of Coron, Palawan [12PM DEC 27: 12.5N 118.1E @ 75kph].
THURSDAY NOON: Turns west to west-southwestward while over the West Philippine Sea, exits PAR as it intensifies slightly...about 601 km west-northwest of Coron, Palawan [12PM DEC 28: 12.6N 114.7E @ 85kph].

*Please be reminded that the Forecast Outlook changes every 6 hours, and the Day 3 Forecast Track have an average error of 250 km...while the wind speed forecast error, averages 35 kph per day. Therefore, a turn to the left or right of its future track and changes in its wind speed must be anticipated from time to time.

INNER RAINBANDS - affecting and spreading across Eastern Leyte, Southern Samar, Dinagat and Siargao Islands. Tropical Storm Conditions with Tropical Storm Force Winds (62-85 kph) will be expected along these bands.
OUTER RAINBANDS - affecting and spreading across Sorsogon, Masbate, Ticao, Bohol, Northern Cebu, Rest of Samar and Leyte, and Surigao Provinces. Tropical Depression Conditions with moderate to strong winds (<62 kph) will be expected along these bands (click here to know more about Rainbands).
24HR TOTAL RAINFALL ACCUMULATION - from 5 up to 100 mm (slight to heavy rainfall) can be expected along areas affected by the outer & inner rainbands (see above)...with isolated amounts of 101 to 350 mm (heavy) along areas near the center of Wukong (Quinta).
